These include the following three characteristics:<\/li><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ol><li>Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity.<\/li><li>Deficits in non-verbal communicative behaviours for social interaction.<\/li><li>Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>In addition to persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, there must be restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities (domain B). These include the following four characteristics:<ol><li>Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech.<\/li><li>Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns of behaviour.<\/li><li>Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus.<\/li><li>Hyper- or hypo reactivity to sensory input or unusual interest in sensory aspects of the environment.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><li>The symptoms must be present in early childhood (domain C).<\/li><li>The symptoms must cause significant impairments in daily functioning (domain D).<\/li><\/ul><p>The diagnosis is made when an individual meets all the criteria listed in domains A, C, and D, and at least 2 of the 4 criteria in domain B.<\/p><p>Autism is a congenital disorder and is often a hereditary condition.
